Music Collective: DJ skills and digital development.

Sugar Stealers latest project has centred around the formation of a music collective; young women and non-binary people becoming a force of change in the industry.

Week one kickstarted with an introduction of each person in the collective. Sugar Stealers welcomed them with a tour of the space and with a brainstorming activity to get to know one another with a music focus. While getting to know each other over snacks, the newfound collective gathered some ideas surrounding the potential outcomes of the process.

The brainstorming activity raised areas of focus, like music genre, branding, venues, and audiences. The conversations and ideas flowed effortlessly, and proved a wonderful start to the project.

Week two followed with practical opportunities offered to the collective. DJ classes led by renowned Princess Trium were a hit amongst the group, providing small-group tutorials on the fundamental skills of the decks which will be built up as the weeks progress. Step by step instructions were learned in a mantra, beginning the formation of a DJ mindset.

Alongside the DJ workshops, music production classes were held to those in the collective who wanted to hone the art of music making. Using Logic Pro, the group were tutored in core skills such as mixing and arranging, which enables them to create original pieces.

Both classes were effective in introducing new skills to the collective, and getting to know each other through group work.
