Penelope Efstathiou

One of Sugar Stealer’s own artists Penelope Efstathiou hosted a personal Art Exhibition titled, ‘Who Are You?’.

Penelope photographed with her, 'Chasing Pavements’ Tryptic.

Blue silhouettes dotted around Nottingham city guide you to her Art Exhibition, a journey of her life and self-exploration through art. The title, ‘Who are you?’, upon visiting the gallery, is almost inverted to the viewer; the extremely personal expressions tell her story, from location, to lifestyle, to life struggles and questions. When asked how she came up with the Exhibition name, she laughed before replying, ‘Well, it’s about me really’. In this way, the art displays an intimate peephole into Penelope’s life, under the broader question to the viewer of their own identity.

I find art a way to release my thoughts and feelings through the use of paint, and it allows me as an artist to be emotionally vulnerable.
— Penelope

Penelope is able to convey a passion in her depictions through a warmth in tone. Her studies on the Cooling Towers (featured above) subvert the industrial power station into the idea of being close to home through the juxtaposing oranges of the towers against the navy sky. The warmth is comforting and homely, symbolic of the end of a long journey home as the towers are one of the first indicators of reaching Nottingham from the motorway.

With the support of her daughters, Angelena and Isabella, Penelope has showcased her work in the Nottingham Society of Artists for the past week, inviting hundreds of visitors to engage with the journey of her work. Here at Sugar Stealers, we are endlessly proud of the Exhibition’s success and Penelope's wonderful artwork.
